Overview

This course is designed to offer a valuable insight and background into the organisation, methodologies and operational aspects that define the UK Railway Industry.

This course is for people who will be working in functions where a basic understanding and knowledge of the operational railway is required.  It is for individuals who may have little practical experience or knowledge of how the railway operates and therefore, will enable them to bolster their understanding and enhance their skills in order to perform their daily tasks with greater confidence and efficiency.

It is envisaged that by learning and understanding the basic principles an individual will be able to make more informed decisions which will improve outputs whilst reducing risk which can lead to errors and reputational damage to the business.

This program supports the overall management function and offers the individual personal development, supporting them and helping them to develop their knowledge of the rail industry from a grassroots level upward.

What is covered?

A basic guide to the landscape of the rail industry structure and the operational railway and principles.

  • An introduction to the organisational structure of the rail industry
  • The railway infrastructure
  • Signalling and train control
  • The trains that we operate
  • The contractual framework that governs our railway
  • Planning and delivery of rail services
  • The end customer(s)

What is involved?

  • Attendance (either in person or by video conference) on a two-day course
  • Completion of an online knowledge test

Benefits

The organisation

  • Delegates will have a greater understanding of how the railway operates enabling more informed judgements and decisions to be taken. This will lead to less errors and more reliable outputs which will improve overall train performance.
  • Ultimately, this will lead to less time interpreting data and errors and a reduction in wasted time which will improve efficiency.
  • Individual delegates will receive a greater volume of attention and guidance than the local manager can provide.

The individual

  • Delegates will be made to feel comfortable in an environment outside of their own employment. This should remove any perception of ‘Big Brother’ and empower the individual to engage fully and openly.
  • Time spent on an individual delegate will be greater due to the local managers’ other numerous responsibilities. This should increase their feeling of worth and give greater exposure to information.
  • An individual delegate will have a greater opportunity to ask questions and learn from their experience working with experienced trainers and consultants who have a comprehensive railway knowledge which they will be looking to pass on.
  • The individual delegate, after attending the course, should be more confident, knowledgeable and engaged on returning to their daily duties.

Course Delivery

This is a trainer-led course. It will be delivered either in the classroom or remotely over a video conferencing service, by one of our experienced trainers.

All delegates receive an account on our online Learning Management System (AssessBook), where they are enrolled onto a course with a knowledge test.  Delegates who complete the online knowledge test and achieve an acceptable score will be able to download a Certificate of Achievement.
